September Newsletter - Change the Way You Look at Health

9-11

September is upon us and we move into the last quarter of the year. With 10th anniversary of the tragic happenings of 9/11 being commemorated around the world I remember the passing of my own mother at this time. I remember watching with horror the planes hitting the building and the people jumping and falling to their deaths. This is the symbol of the tarot card of the tower but then doubled, very symbolic.

In remembrance of this tragic event I would ask you, if you are able, to sit in silence for five minutes on the day of 9/11 and for the Aura-Soma people to place bottle 102 Archangel Samael, bottle 104 Chamael and bottle 108 Jeremiel in a triangle around you and to be still and just send out love to the world. You will be doing humanity a great service especially to the misguided people who we think caused this tragedy.

  A Candle

candle

There's a man who owns a candle,
And a man who has a match;
They'd like to get together,
But alas, there is a catch,
For neither trusts the other
Not to steal the precious spark.

So blinded and divided,
They stay stranded in the dark.

So let us draw a lesson
From this sad, misguided pair,
And try our very upmost
To love and trust and share.

For with determination,
And faith in human worth
We'll light so many candles
As will brighten all the earth

By Margaret Ingall

I hope you have all had a good vacation and are ready to get back to the daily routine of work, children going to school and general daily chores.

I had hoped to get an influx of answered questionnaires but unfortunately not one has arrived. So please if you would answer the questions from last months’ newsletter and send it back to me that would be greatly appreciated.

This previous month has seen me traveling quite a bit to the U.K. and the other side of the world to Australia. While on the aircraft, to while away the hours, I of course watched all the movies and a number of documentaries. One documentary really stood out for me, it’s called “Foodinc”. It was about the food industry in the United States and by the time I had finished watching it all I wanted to do was to have my own piece of land and really go self sufficient. Hopefully one day this will materialize.

I then received an e-mail about food and some of the so-called science behind the most recent crazy fads and the promised health benefits. This got me to thinking about this months’ newsletter and so I am going to dedicate this month to health.

Fuzzy Thinking

Attempting, for four decades or more, to remain rooted in the tenuous and shifting soil of reality tends to make one sceptical of suggestions of grand conspiracies by insiders pulling the strings that run the world. And yet, and yet. . . .

It seems like every few months a new “scientific discovery” about food and health bursts upon the scene. How far do you go back? Remember. . .

100% polyunsaturated fat!
With the iron that women need!
High-fibre!
Enriched with zinc!
More calcium than the leading brand!
Now with oat bran for your heart!

First, a legitimate researcher publishes a study in the New England Journal of Medicine that claims, heavily hedged and based on largely statistical evidence, to demonstrate a connection between a certain dietary component and some aspect of health, for example, a particular kind of fibre and serum help cholesterol levels. That night, the evening news trumpets, “Researchers at the University of Sausalito have discovered a connection between peach fuzz and heart disease. In a study of 100 peach pickers and packers. . . . Before you know it, the Sunday supplement’s bulging with recipes for peach pie with fuzzy crust.

Meanwhile, the advertising engine is coming up to speed. Full page ads sponsored by the Georgia Peach Association proclaim, “Look for ‘Fresh Georgia Peaches’ on the bag. And remember, only Georgia peaches have 25% more fuzz”. Oat-this and oat-that breakfast cereals begin to vanish from the supermarket, displaced by the arrival of Peachies, Fuzz-chex, and Teenage Mutant Fuzzy Ninja Turtles. Soon, the whole supermarket looks like it’s been sprayed with minoxodil. Whole grain cookies enriched with peach fuzz. Fuzz-tab supplements. Fuzzy toothpaste. “Fizzy fuzz” peach champagne.

Now everybody else tries to jump on the bandwagon. The Soybean Institute launches a new promotion to remind people that soybeans are the “hairy legume.” Cheese makers remind consumers “Cheese—so good for you it grows its own fuzz in the fridge.” “The Fuzzy Way To Health,” “Dr. Harry’s Fuzz Diet,” and “The Plantation Peach-Fuzz Cookbook” contend for space in the bookstore window, and their authors make the rounds of the talk shows.

The silliness builds to a crescendo of absurdity, around which time the medical journals start to publish papers such as “Peach Fuzz: No More Effective Than Sawdust” and “No Fuzz-Cholesterol Link In Rats.” As the wave begins to recede, another article is published, “Possible Correlation Between Sesame Seed In Diet and Immune System Performance.” And away we go again.

As I said earlier traveling to and from the U.K. and Australia this last month I have watched so much but the most distressing documentary was “Foodinc”. After watching this documentary I will not purchase any meat products from America again. This documentary was one of the most shocking and disturbing things I have ever seen and how these poor animals are treated. They are even feeding farm bred salmon with corn which is extremely unnatural. So, if you can stomach it, this documentary is an absolute must watch to get informed about what we are given to eat.

You may not think that this has any relevance for you personally if you do not live in the United States but I can assure you it does. After watching this documentary I went into my local Cold Storage supermarket here in Singapore and went to the meat counter. Each item, the ham, turkey, bacon, salami are all flagged with the country of origin and at least half of the cold meats on display came from the United States.

I just want to make it clear here I am not anti America I just would like the cattle, pigs, chickens to have a better life before it is over and a more healthy production of food for humanity. Surely, raising chickens in the pitch black can never be justified – but it is becoming common practice. If it’s dark the chickens move around less and get fatter more quickly. I am sure other countries may be doing the same thing but being back in the U.K. the organic sections and the locally grown meat products had far more shelf space than I had previously seen there and the farmers markets are springing up in local rural towns all over the country.

We all need to be aware of what we are taking into our bodies on a daily basis, especially with diseases such as cancer, obesity, diabetes on the increase. I personally need to do more investigation for myself into other country’s food practices. We have seen the criminal disregard of food regulations by manufacturers and farmers in China, whether it be infant’s milk powder that was laced with melamine, the same chemical found in contaminated pet-food exports last year that caused scores of U.S. animals to die, or whether it is the mysterious case of exploding water melons caused by over use of growth chemicals. Even honey has been found to contain lead and the use of clenbuterol, also known as "lean meat powder" is a fat-burning animal feed additive used extensively in the Chinese pork industry that causes nausea and dizziness if consumed by humans. The Chinese authorities are well aware of the problem but the constant drive for lower prices makes it an uphill battle.

Recently National Geographic magazine has been looking at “fresh water” supplies and concluded “The water flowing from your tap might be spiked with some unusual ingredients, according to scientists who are investigating what lurks in our freshwater supplies. Around the world, researchers are finding trace amounts of substances—from heroine and cardamon to rocket fuel and birth control hormones—that might be having unintended consequences for humans and wildlife alike.”

It seems almost everyone is trying to lose weight these days (myself included) but I cringe when I see people substituting soft drinks with slim-line versions of the same. Often these slim-line variations contain Aspartame as the artificial sweetening agent. Why do I cringe? Because when Aspartame is ingested methanol is released in the small intestine when the methyl group of aspartame encounters the enzyme hymotrypsin. The methanol is then turned to formaldehyde, which is then converted to formic acid. To give you an example of how dangerous this is, think of formic acid as ant or bee sting poison, which is what it is. It is also used to strip epoxy and urethane coatings, is a principal ingredient in limescale remover and toilet bowl cleaner, just what your body doesn`t need! When aspartame is consumed, the ingredients flow straight to your brain – that’s why I cringe!

formic

One of the other strange ingredients in our food is MSG. I have often wondered if there could be an actual chemical causing the massive Obesity epidemic and so did a gentleman called John Erb. He was a research Assistant at the University of Waterloo, and spent years working for the Government. He made an amazing discovery while going through scientific journals for a book he was writing called The Slow Poisoning of America. In hundreds of studies around the world, scientists were creating obese mice and rats to use in diet or diabetes test studies. No strain of rat or mouse is naturally obese, so the scientists have to create them. They make these morbidly obese creatures by injecting them with a chemical when they are first born. The chemical is called MSG, or Mono Sodium Glutamate. It triples the amount of insulin the pancreas creates, causing mice, rats (and humans?) to become obese. MSG is scientifically proven to cause obesity and worse still it is an addictive substance.  Since its introduction into the food supply fifty years ago, MSG has been added in larger and larger doses to the pre-packaged meals, soups, snacks and fast foods we are tempted to eat every day. Addicted to fast food? Now you know why!

Here is the Introduction from the disturbing documentary I watched:

In Food, Inc., filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the veil on a nation's food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that has been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of their government's regulatory agencies, USDA and FDA. This nation's food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of its workers and your own environment. We have bigger-breasted chickens, the perfect pork chop, herbicide-resistant soybean seeds, even tomatoes that won't go bad, but we also have new strains of E. coli—the harmful bacteria that causes illness for an estimated 73,000 Americans annually. We are riddled with widespread obesity, particularly among children, and an epidemic level of diabetes among adults.
Featuring interviews with such experts as Eric Schlosser (Fast Food Nation), Michael Pollan (The Omnivore's Dilemma, In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto) along with forward thinking social entrepreneurs like Stonyfield's Gary Hirshberg and Polyface Farms' Joel Salatin, Food, Inc. reveals surprising—and often shocking truths—about what we eat, how it's produced, who we have become as a nation and where we are going from here.

Please have a look at their website www.foodincmovie.com - if you have the stomach for it that is!

Not only must we think about what we ingest, we also need to be aware of the chemicals we put onto our bodies through showering, body lotions, deodorants and cosmetics just to name a few.

skin

The skin is porous and anything you put on it will be assimilated by the body. If you don’t believe me try this simple test. Rub a clove of garlic on your big toe and within minutes you will be able to taste the garlic in your mouth! This means that every chemical that is applied to the body will to a degree be transmitted through the skin and reach all parts of the body.

The continuing increase in breast cancer doesn’t seem to be abating. What is closest to the female breast – the armpit – which we spray every day with antiperspirants, most of which contain aluminium. A study published in 2009 by the journal Breast Cancer Research proposed a link between breast cancer and the application of cosmetic chemicals including phthalates and aluminum salts in the underarm region, because of their oestrogenic and/or genotoxic properties, which provides an evidence-based hypothesis capable of further research. Because estrogen has the ability to promote the growth of breast cancer cells, some scientists have suggested that the aluminum-based compounds in antiperspirants may contribute to the development of breast cancer.  Interestingly, deodorants combined with antiperspirant agents are classified as drugs by the FDA!

Cornell University puts the problem graphically by stating the following: “Ingredients in a wide variety of cosmetics and personal care products can mimic the effects of the hormone estrogen. Scientists are concerned that even at low levels these environmental estrogens may work together with the body’s own estrogen to increase the risk of breast cancer."

'Your Inner Goddesses - A Guide to Archetypal Feminine Energies'

A Teleseminar

Thursday 15th September, 7.00pm BST/6pm UTC.

goddess

Find out more about the complex mix of emotions and needs that make up each of us, and the seven archetypal goddesses which embody them. Which are you? Rational, cool-headed Athena? Home-loving Hestia? Or maybe sensual Aphrodite?

Each of the seven goddesses embodies distinctive patterns and behaviours and offers us a route to understanding ourselves better - the drives and motivations that shape us, and how they affect our work, relationships, conflicts and dreams.

Understanding the mix of archetypes that is unique to us individually gives a great tool to help us deepen our self-knowledge and understanding, and aids us in our seeking for empowerment and enlightenment. Are you playing out Persephone’s journey into the underworld in your life? If so, what do you need to do to not get stuck? Or like Hera do you seek union with another – and how do you avoid the disappointments that were hers.

Each of the goddesses embodies a different aspect of archetypal feminine energy. With their stories, their troubles and triumphs to guide us we can more successfully navigate the waters of our own lives.

This is not just one for the ladies either – gentlemen, this could give you great insights into understanding the woman in your life!
